A Cyclist's Paradise: The Hawthorne Trail State Park

Hawthorne Trail
A Cyclist's Paradise: Unveiling The Hawthorne Trail State Park in Gainesville, FL

Address: The trail has many points of entry, a few of which are Boulware Springs, La Chua Trail, and Depot Park.

The StayGainesville Connection: StayGainesville's Susannah Peddie discovered the Hawthorne Trail many years after moving to Gainesville. Her home in downtown Gainesville's historic Duckpond neighborhood  is just a mile from an entry to the trail. Over the past 13 years she has rollerbladed, biked, and walked more miles than she can count. She loves the overlooks that look directly over Paynes Prairie, the bridge at Kate's Fish Camp overlooking the beautiful Cypress knees and trees, and she also loves the small rolling hills that offer extra exercise (and relief). She has photographed the trail many times as well. She and her son made the trek to Hawthorne and back a few years ago- and maybe one day will do it again (36 miles). The Hawthorne Trail is one of her favorite places.

Gainesville, Florida, has an extremely vibrant outdoor scene. Nestled amidst this dynamic tapestry lies The Hawthorne Trail State Park, a haven for cyclists, hikers, and nature enthusiasts alike. This 16-mile rails-to-trails gem, meticulously converted from a historic railroad corridor, offers a scenic journey through diverse ecosystems and a peaceful escape from the urban buzz. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist seeking a challenging ride or a casual walker enjoying a leisurely stroll, The Hawthorne Trail State Park provides a unique and unforgettable outdoor experience.

From Rails to Trails: The Story Behind The Hawthorne Trail

The Hawthorne Trail's story began in the late 19th century, when the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad constructed a vital transportation link between Gainesville and Hawthorne. For over a century, this railroad played a crucial role in the region's economic development. However, by the late 20th century, the railroad fell into disuse. Recognizing the potential for a valuable recreational space, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection acquired the abandoned corridor in 1993. Through careful planning and meticulous restoration, the rails were transformed into a scenic paved trail, breathing new life into the historic corridor and creating a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
