Gainesville, Florida offers a plethora of outdoor activities to beat the heat and enjoy the sunshine, thanks to its abundance of natural springs, rivers, parks, and trails. Here are some ideas for water-based fun and shaded adventures:

Ichetucknee Springs State Park: The perfect place to stay cool in the hot summer.

1. Ichetucknee Springs State Park:

Cool off at Ichetucknee Springs State Park: Take a scenic float trip down the crystal-clear Ichetucknee River, known for its constant 72°F temperature. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape of cypress swamps, moss-draped trees, and natural springs.

Remember to be sun-safe by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water,

2. Explore Sweetwater Preserve and San Felasco Hammock State Park:

Escape the sunshine on the extensive network of shaded trails. The lush canopy overhead creates a cooler microclimate, perfect for hiking, biking, or jogging. You’ll enjoy the cooler temperatures, encounter a variety of birds, and experience a deeper connection with nature.

Be sure to take a picture of the trail map before you start- it can get confusing (we've had a 5 mile hike turn into an 8 mile hike because of a wrong turn- it was beautiful though!).

Ginnie Springs

3. Seek thrills at Ginnie Springs:

This aquatic playground offers a variety of activities for water enthusiasts. Relax on a float down the Santa Fe River, explore underwater caves while snorkeling, or cool off under cascading waterfalls. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and cliff jumping are also options.
